Dr Belinda George reads to her school kids every Tuesday evening before bed to help boost their literacy skills as well as offer them comfort.
Texas, United States – School students always benefit so much more when a teacher goes the extra mile. In the United States, a school principal turned her Tuesday nights into something that many of her students look forward to each week.
Dr Belinda George is the principal of Homer Drive Elementary in Beaumont, Texas. Every Tuesday night after dinner she live streams herself reading a bedtime story which is accessible to all her students.
She throws on her pyjamas, snuggles down into bed and reads a children’s book out loud. She asks her viewers to think about the book as she reads. Students from her school can earn advanced reader points as rewards for listening in. She calls her little project “Tucked-In-Tuesdays”.
It initially started as a project for her school but it has drawn a wider audience and now children from all over the US join in each week. It all started because 94% of her students come from disadvantaged homes and had very poor literacy skills. Her weekly reading has helped boost the school’s literacy numbers.
“The bottom line is I love, love kids. I know if I don’t reach them outside of school, I [may] never reach them in school.”
