Angie won herself a R1000 prize in January and while she needed it, she decided to donate it to a little boy in need… which inspired a life-changing event.

South Africa (13 February 2021) – Hippo.co.za ran a radio competition on 702 in January which would see the winner earning themselves an R1000 cash prize. In the middle of January, an extra R1000 can go a long way. That is why when winner Angie got the news; she instantly knew what she would do with her prize money – give it away!

Angie had heard about little 8-year-old Nathan that needed a hearing aid. She decided that she wanted to give her winnings towards Nathan’s hearing aids.

Ivan Marais, Nathan’s father, had been on the radio to discuss Nathan’s need for hearing aids the day before. According to Ivan, they were able to borrow a pair, and Nathan thrived at school, but once the hearing aids were returned, he struggled to cope. That is why Ivan set up a crowdfund on BackaBuddy, with the hopes of raising the funds needed to get a new pair.

When asked what she would be doing with her winnings, Angie didn’t hesitate and expressed her wish to support Nathan. The moment had many people in tears!

Hippo.co.za found out about Angie’s generosity and decided to repay her kindness. Vera Nagtegaal, the head of marketing and culture at Hippo.co.za reached out on 702’s Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa to share some happy news!

“We are thrilled with how the event turned out and what a nice opportunity to give back. As brands and as businesses, that should be our main aim for 2021, is to gove back because we all are facing very difficult times” – Vera Nagtegaal

Hippo.co.za have jumped on board to do, even more; they are pledging to cover the cost of Nathan’s hearing aids, they reimbursed Angie her prize money and then even better, have gifted Nathan a limited edition hippo toy!

Ivan, Nathan’s father, was left in tears. Nathan’s life is forever changed thanks to the generosity of Angie and Hippo.co.za.
