Vitamin C plays an important role in healthy immune systems so Project Orange is working to deliver 19 million oranges to communities in need.
South Africa (23 July 2020) – Food parcels have been a massive help to everyone that has received them but sadly they do not contain enough nutrients to offer balance and to boost immune systems. Project Orange stepped forward to offer a solution; millions of fresh oranges.
To date, they have distributed 4 million oranges to communities in need but are aiming much higher. The hope is to distribute 19 million oranges.
Project Orange is an initiative by the Ruben Richards Foundation in association with the Citrus Producers from the Olifants River Valley. Collectively, these farmers and producers will donate approximately 19 million oranges to be delivered to the poor and vulnerable in South Africa
Why oranges? Well, oranges are a good source of several vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C which they are famous for. Oranges also contain thiamine, folate, and potassium. Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C and one large orange provides over 100% of the recommended daily intake.
So while we still love our apples and carrots, an orange a day should help keep the doctor away. As vitamin C is one of the key recommendations for anyone battling a COVID-19 infection, it is vital that oranges are distributed in poor communities where a vitamin C supplement is unaffordable.
