The Brazilian players might not have gotten a medal in women’s Rugby Sevens, but 25-year-old rugger Isadora Cerullo was overjoyed on Monday night when her girlfriend Marjorie Enya, 28, proposed to her on the pitch.
Enya is an Olympic volunteer working with the organizing committee. And her girlfriend plays rugby for the Brazillian Women’s squad.
“As soon as I knew she was in the squad I thought I have to make this special,” Enya was quoted, “I know rugby people are amazing and they would embrace it.”
Enya and Cerullo have been together for two years.
“She is the love of my life,” Enya told a news outlet.
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Brazil since 2013 following a National Justice Council decision, though the ruling is being appealed to the country’s supreme court. Same-sex unions have been legal in Brazil since 2004.
Enya’s gesture was the first athlete proposal at the Rio 2016 games.
As the pair embraced in front of the cameras, local volunteers clapped, cheered and waved love heart balloons.
