After colouring in with children in need, Stephan realised that many of them had never seen animals like zebras or impalas. Trips to enjoy animal life aren’t a priority when you’re focused on survival, so he made them a promise that they wouldn’t miss out for much longer.

Johannesburg, South Africa (20 April, 2023)— A simple promise was made recently, inspired by a conversation between Stephan Ferreira and a few kids in need Charity Begins With Me helps out.

While they were colouring together, Stephan and the kids got speaking about animals, and a new goal emerged: Get the kids to see all the animals they’ve never seen before, beyond the colouring books.

Stephan shared:

“Most of them have never seen a zebra. Or an impala. Or a flamingo. If you think about it – it is actually pretty unrealistic to even assume they have seen any of those animals so I am not sure why I even asked. Life in the township is about survival and trips to the zoo are not on anyone’s list of priorities.

“It breaks my heart to even think how much they are missing out on and so I made a promise to them that I will take them to see the zebras. And lions. And elephants. And rhinos.

“I am also not a fan of zoos but that is a discussion for another day.”

Charity Begins With Me is hoping to raise enough money from their R10 book sale to cover the costs of transport and entrance fees for 25 kids. They’re also welcoming any snack and drink donations for the kids for the adventure.
