“My Mom Was Over the Moon.”

This Cum Laude graduate’s story is a real-life example of ‘it’s not about where you start, but what you do with it, and a mother’s love going the long haul.

Durban, South Africa (26 May, 2023) — Anyone who needed a reminder that it’s not about where you start but what you do with what you have, should turn to Cum Laude graduate Nkosenhle Dlamini and his mom’s story.

Raised in the outskirts of KwaZulu-Natal near Nkonkenji, Nkosenhle’s family have gotten by on their mother’s earnings as a street vendor.

Ntombi Prisca Dlamini had to take care of two boys on her own, with Nkosenhle as the eldest.

Still, she proved that mountains can be moved and the path to dreams cleared with love and determination in one’s arsenal.

Wanting to help pave a brighter future for her son, Ntombi used the extra money she worked hard to raise as a street vendor to pay for Nkosenhle’s tertiary education.

Her efforts paid off because just two days ago, he graduated from the Durban University of Technology at the top of his class!

The Dean’s Merit award winner shared that he “never thought that in [his] life he would experience such a great journey.”

He further added that his achievement as a Business Information Management grad was largely because of his mom.

“My biggest cheerleader, my mom was over the moon because she used the money that she raised from selling on the street to support my academic journey, she is my hero.”—Nkosenhle Dlamini.

Now, the Cum Laude graduate is one step closer to his entrepreneurial dreams, something he shares runs through his bloodline.
