4 recyclers have been hailed heroes for rescuing kittens from a burning veld in Rynfield and taking them to a local nursery school for assistance.

It is burning season in Gauteng, many open areas of veld are being burned to make way for new growth in spring. It is a hot topic and many people have varied opinions on the matter. However, due to a veld fire, 4 unlikely heroes have emerged from the smokey haze.

In Rynfield, a group of informal recyclers noticed kittens trapped in a veld that was being burned. One of the men quickly braved the flames, smoke and ash to save the kittens from harm. Knowing they needed help, the group approached a nearby nursery school to ask for assistance.

The man showed the kittens to the staff and they called Debbie Welsh, a devote animal lover. She took the kittens from them and called her friend Jane Richman, a Boat Lake Village resident who fosters animals for Benoni Animal Rescue Centre (BARC). The kittens were taken in and kept safe.

The very next day, the recycler came back to make sure that the kittens were safe and cared for.

“I told him that I had taken them to a safe place,” – Debbie Welsh.

“It’s the most amazing experience I have ever had in animal rescue. He has nothing but he chose to save these little babies.”

The kittens are currently being fostered by Jane, who has confirmed that they are about 3-weeks-old. There are 3 females and a male. For now, they are being bottle fed until they are strong enough and reach 8-weeks-old, then they will be placed up for adoption.

“They were tiny and fragile when I first got them; I could feel their little spines, but they’re growing stronger each day. If these four men hadn’t helped them they would have died in this cold. I think they are heroes,”

“They’ve got nothing and for them to show such compassion is amazing.” – Jane Richman

This is such a happy ending for the kittens. We hope they find loving “furever” homes when they are ready. You can find out more about adoption by contacting the Benoni Animal Rescue Centre here.
