Yolanda Valentine inherited a recycling buy-back centre from her father which is a lifeline for 20 families who collect and sell recyclables in her area.
Fish Hoek, Cape Town – Yolanda Valentine is working to streamline her business so that she can help more of the unemployed community members in Fish Hoek and False Bay.
The Angels Resource Centre met with Yolanda to help her build her small business into something that can support the local community. They train and mentor entrepreneurs in recycling. With many success stories under their belt, the centre hopes to uplift Yolanda and her community in the same manner.
“To begin the process of change in the Peninsula, we’re partnering with Yolanda to help expand her options: from this point, she can pay more people, accept more items for recycling, and create a community hub where workshops in ecobricking, making furniture and art from upcycled items, and provide mentoring to entrepreneurs.”
To get the project up and running, the Angel Resource Centre launched a crowdfund which will be used to help purchase Yolanda a small vehicle.
“The funds will be used to purchase a vehicle so Yolanda can take the recyclables to facilities, thereby cutting collection costs and a bailer to crush cans, tins, plastics, and other packaging into compact and easily transportable blocks.
These can be easily transported to recycling centres to be sold to the highest bidder. This will benefit local waste collectors and entrepreneurs, as they will be able to deliver recyclables more frequently and generate more income in the process.”
They are encouraging people to help them give entrepreneurs in under-resourced communities an opportunity to generate an income from recycling.
