begging homeless

This is what a manager at a restaurant did after seeing a homeless man, pressed against his shop window, begging for food.

Have you ever sat in a window seat at a restaurant, tucking into something warming with your friends, when a homeless person presses his nose to the window and asks you for something to eat?

*awkward*

In most places, a manager would rush out and chase the hungry person away to spare you the discomfort. Not so, with Danny Diliberto, the manager at Doppio Zero, St George’s Mall. He started a soup kitchen, together with his kitchen staff, called Ladles of Love.

Danny and his team of volunteers now run three soup kitchens each week in Cape Town, which provide a hot bowl of soup and bread to anyone who finds themselves homeless, in any kind of weather.

Kathleen Quillinan from Pesto Princess shared this incredible story which is resonating with so many South Africans.

This is what a restauranter did after catching a homeless man begging for food.

Pesto Princess started out really, really small, from Kathleen’s home kitchen in Observatory, back in 1998. Kathleen wanted to be a professional opera singer, and needed some extra cash to further her singing studies. Music was her first love, yet she had this second passion for food that she was longing to explore. Kathleen cooked up an intriguing array of baked and bottled goods which she sold on Fridays at the local school market.

But it was the pesto sauce that people kept coming back for.

Her domestic worker Jessie Limane became the first staff member who simply did not understand why Kathleen’s focus had shifted from cleaning to cooking.

Today they have a fully accredited factory they refer to as the ‘palace’, and continue to produce handmade pesto sauces using the same recipes created sixteen years ago.

Kathleen teamed up with Ladles of Love and for every Pesto Princess soup sold, a donation is made to the incredible organisation creating an easy way to make a big difference!

“I believe that human beings are inherently good. We all want to help others in need, but sometimes we just don’t know where to start. If you haven’t planned anything for Mandela Month, why not visit Ladles of Love and see just how easy it is to donate, to volunteer or simply to learn more about this inspiring initiative?”

You might have friends who would resonate with this opportunity, so please consider sharing this post to help Danny and his team get the support they need!
