The future of South Africa, our talented youth, are writing the ‘Good Stuff’! Their stories are enthralling and their talents undeniable.

FunDza is an organisation that aims to get teens and young adult South Africans reading for pleasure and loving it. They hosted a writing competition to entice the youth to try their hands at writing and hopefully be bitten by the writing bug.

FunDza believes that all South Africans should have the opportunity to fall in love with reading with all its benefits. To read for pleasure, and to make it something you want to do every day, you need to LOVE what you’re reading, and you need to be able to access great content, easily.

The competition had a great prize, awarding the two winners a R 2,500.00 cash prize. The only requirements were that they write about what our future will be like in 2044. They hoped to see a main character that faced challenges and overcame them constructively.

The winners were announce and the stories are available to read. We loved the story by the winner of the junior competition, Morena Maoka. His story is about schooling moving from traditional textbooks to working from tablets and how the main character worked to fight this change.

In the future, 27 years from now, there is still racial and class division but mostly people are separated by being pro technology or against it. The government has robots to do away with corruption which sounds great but people are not allowed to braai anymore so it has a down side.

Morena Maoka is a talented young writer and his futuristic twist on life in South Africa is truly fascinating. You can read his story here.

“It feels great to win. I mean what were the odds of that? Nevertheless I am more excited about getting to share my story and futuristic thoughts with everybody else. I’ll probably use some of the money to add on to my hard copy collection of Diary of A Wimpy Kid, either than that, it would be wise to save the rest seeing that the summer holidays are slowly approaching us.” – Morena Maoka
