Samukelisiwe Nkambule, from rural Emgwenya, has defied the odds to achieve academic and personal success through the support of Penreach and Transnet, embodying the transformative power of education and partnerships.

Mbombela, South Africa (14 April 2024) – Samukelisiwe Nkambule, also known as Samu, has defied the odds and soared to academic excellence.

Hailing from the rural area of Emgwenya, formerly known as Waterval Boven, Samu’s journey to academic excellence showcases the transformative power of partnerships, education, and sheer determination.

Joining the inaugural ten Penreach bursary scholars in 2016, dubbed the “Transnet Ambassadors,” Samu quickly found herself thriving in her new academic environment. Sponsored by Transnet, this initiative provided her with the invaluable support needed to overcome challenges and soar to new heights.

“Samu’s journey is an inspiration to us all. Her resilience and determination in the face of adversity are a testament to the impact of our programme, our partnerships, and the dedication of our educators and phenomenal scholars,” says Thuli Makofane, Programme Director at Penreach.

But Samu’s journey wasn’t solely focused on academics. Far from it. Despite never having been exposed to sports before, she discovered a natural talent that saw her excel on both the soccer and hockey fields. By Grade 9, she was proudly representing Penryn’s first soccer team, demonstrating not only her academic prowess but also her all-round abilities and passion.

Academically, Samu’s achievements are nothing short of outstanding. Recognised as one of the top 10 most improved scholars between Grades 8 and 11, she showcased an impressive improvement of over 24%. Her school honoured this remarkable accomplishment by presenting her with the prestigious Exploding Bucket Award. This accolade symbolises her unwavering determination, discipline, and hard work. By Grade 12, Samu ranked 8th academically and received numerous certificates of excellence.

The Power of Partnership

These awards not only celebrate Samu’s individual success but also spotlight the robust partnership between Penreach and Penryn College. According to Johanri de Jager, Communication Manager at Penreach, the Penreach Bursary Programme is dedicated to fostering academic excellence and providing holistic support to exceptionally talented and vulnerable youth from underserved communities.

Fast forward eight years, and Samu continues to embody the essence of perseverance and achievement. She is now enrolled in a B Com Honours Degree programme, a graduate of WITS University with a B Com in Accounting, and a valued member of the KPMG team.

Samu’s success wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of individuals who believed in her potential. Penreach extends its deepest gratitude to Leticia Mlambo, the scholar’s guardian mother at Penreach, the dedicated teachers at Penryn South Africa, Samu’s family, and her life mentor, Theresa Vivian Moila.

“As we continue our mission to empower the next generation of leaders, Samu’s story serves as an inspiration to countless others, demonstrating that with the right support, dreams can become reality,” concludes Makofane.

Samukelisiwe Nkambule’s inspiring journey with Penreach and Transnet serves as a powerful reminder that with determination, support, and the right opportunities, anyone can overcome adversity and achieve their dreams.
