A 7 year old is doing everything he can to make sure every single dog in his neighbourhood is healthy and looked after.

A little guy, by the name of Sipho is fast becoming a little celebrity in Hermanus for all the right reasons. The young hero strolled into the Hermanus Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) a little over 8 months ago and has now made it his mission to make sure every single animal is being looked after in his community.

“About 8 months ago, a little chap marched into our reception area, stating “N’difuna i-band!” (Isi Xhosa for “I want a leash”) and then he said “N’difuna i-dogmor!” and we kind-a went “HUH?!?!?”

They gave Sipho his ‘band’ and his ‘dogmore’ and then the little guy went on his way but proceeded to visit the shelter every week from then… each time bringing his dogs along with him.

“Time passed and lots of ‘dogmor’ later, we learned that his dogs names were; “Government”, “Policeman” and “Social Worker”.”

As the weeks went by, the team at HAWS were quite concerned that Sipho was bringing more and more dogs and puppies to the shelter.

“So we began asking questions. At first, Sipho was having none of it. But then, slowly, the story began to emerge…..”

Sipho had made it his self-appointed task to round up every single sick dog in his neighbourhood, and see to it, that all the animals get treated and healed. Sipho even went further, and rounded up every single puppy and its owner in his local area, insisting that they go to HAWS and get the puppies dewormed, kitted out with fancy leashes and collars, and generally health checked.

For the past 8 months, HAWS have been assisting Sipho for free as the love the little guy’s passion but they are in need of some help with the funding.

“Obviously all of this “care” has cost quite a bit of cash and Sipho, bless his little generous heart, has thought it’s all been for free.”

“Sadly, though, economic realities must intrude for most of us and they have done so with Sipho. This poor fellow is devastated that he can’t have free “muti” anymore. We simply cannot afford to keep carrying the costs for Sipho, despite his stirling efforts cleaning up our forecourt, and trying to “earn” all his animal care.”

HAWS have started a collection which they’ve named “Sipho’s Fund” to assist all the animals he brings in. To assist Sipho on his mission to save all the animals just contact Lenke on 0283121281 or adoptions@hermanusanimalwelfare.co.za.

  1. So moved by this little guy! Will make an effort to make a monthly donation. I can’t wait to see how the people of SA come together to make a difference again ❤️
