A rugby community rallied together to support an injured rugby player, exemplifying the power of unity and compassion.
Roodepoort, South Africa (02 May 2024) – A school community recently united to support one of their own, Mondré Elliott, a spirited 12-year-old rugby player who faced a daunting setback on the field.
During an emotional match, Mondré, a key player for the “Florries” rugby team, sustained a severe injury, fracturing his leg in two places. With his parents lacking medical aid, the prospect of affording the necessary operation loomed heavily over the Elliott family. However, in times of adversity, the true spirit of community shines brightest. News of Mondré’s predicament spread like wildfire, prompting an outpouring of support from neighbours, friends, and even strangers.
What unfolded was nothing short of remarkable! Driven by compassion and a shared sense of purpose, the community united to raise the funds needed for Mondré’s surgery.
One of the parents at “Trinity” started a funding process, and the rugby players started donating savings and pocket money to help cover the cost of the surgery. In just three days, they managed to raise R100,000 to cover the cost of the operation. The kids even started a “video challenge” inspiring each other to donate.
In the words of Marlene, one of the groups of 1st team players’ parents, “What truly sets this story apart is the way in which individuals from all walks of life came together, putting aside their differences and uniting behind a common cause, the love for Rugby and Rugby players! Individuals, neighbouring schools and even rival sports teams all pitched in, demonstrating that when it comes to supporting a fellow Rugby player in need, there are no boundaries or divisions that cannot be overcome.”
As the Springboks, South Africa’s national rugby team, have repeatedly demonstrated, rugby is more than a sport in our country. It embodies the values of unity, resilience, and camaraderie. Rugby is a powerful reminder that we are indeed stronger together, and stories like these cement that idea.
Thank you to the Laerskool Florida community for their kindness. And good luck with your recovery Mondré.
