The King’s School students in grades 8 to 12 picked up knitting needles to make ‘granny squares’ for Charity Begins With Me. Now the ladies are joining them into winter blankets.
Johannesburg, South Africa (25 June 2024) — High schoolers from The Kings School in the West Rand spent weeks learning how to knit, making “granny squares,” which they then donated to Charity Begins With Me, where senior knitters are weaving the squares into warming blankets for winter.
“So proud of our High School learners for their incredible effort in the knitting initiative this term! 🧶 Together, we learned new skills and crafted over 500 squares for a special community service project. 🎉 It’s amazing what we can achieve when we come together with creativity and compassion” – The Kings School.
Stephen Ferreira started ‘Charity Begins With Me‘ shortly after he was first diagnosed with cancer in 2016. He realised he could do so much more with the life he had left and quickly set up the charity as a way to give back. He ran the charity throughout his chemotherapy treatments, remission and, sadly, his relapse. Whatever battles he faces in his own life, it is those of others that give him the strength to push through.
Working with the local community has become a massive part of Stephen’s life, and making sure everyone has equal opportunity is even more so. Times are tough, and he sees them first-hand on the ground.
Stephen has been rallying support for the knitters of the community. From collecting wool and needles to having huge donations like this sent in to give the ladies something to do to keep busy, and give back to their own community!
