Generation Schools in Hermanus was under threat from a raging fire but 50 firefighters and volunteers stopped it, now they are giving thanks by giving back.
The fire that has raged through parts of the Western Cape has ravaged and caused tremendous loss. However, it has also brought out the very best in people. Communities have come together to work on rebuilding. Individuals have gone above and beyond to make a difference.
The Generations Schools in Hermanus was on the brink of disaster, as the fire slowly encroached on the school but thanks to 50 firefighters and volunteers, it was kept at bay.
The school published their thanks on Facebook along with the promise to give back to the brave men and women who helped protect the school.
“With Hermanus being surrounded by raging fires, our school was seven meters away from the flames. To thank the 50 firefighters and volunteers, our team led by Harriet and Clarissa, with donations from generous parents, went around giving the firefighters cool drinks and food to keep their energy levels up. Thank you, brave men and women, of Hermanus. Tomorrow we will be cooking food for those affected by these devastating fires.
“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much”
They kept their promise and cooked warm meals the next day.
“There are still active fires around Hermanus. Firefighters and volunteers are still busy with mop-up operations and controlling flare-ups. We are so grateful to all those who have been a part of this amazing community. Thank you to Generation Hermanus staff members and parents, who donated money to purchase cool drinks and snacks for the firefighters. This morning they were up early making curry and rice for both the law enforcement agencies currently involved in the Overberg fire situation, and to drop off and distribute at the fire department.”
