Sea Rescue South Africa helped get a deep sea fisherman home to help his family after his home was wiped out by the Hout Bay Fire. It’s a touching story!
Sea Rescue South Africa is an organisation that helps save lives in open water. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is run by over 1 000 highly skilled, unpaid volunteers who are on standby day and night throughout the year.
The charity has 31 bases around the coast, 4 on inland dams, a fleet of 96 rescue craft, 38 rescue vehicles, 16 quad bikes and 11 tractors. They use these resources along with the help of helicopters to save lives across the country.
“The NSRI education arm, called WaterWise Academy, teaches children what to do in an emergency and gives them the confidence to initiate basic bystander CPR while they wait for the ambulance to arrive. The WaterWise Academy targets disadvantaged youth, because statistically they are the most at risk”
Recently the charity helped a man who was aboard a deep sea fishing vessel, the man was told of the Hout Bay Fire and learned that his family had lost everything and become destitute. The Rigel 4, the deep sea vessel owned by Ruwekus Fishing, got in contact with the NSRI to request assistance with helping get the man back on shore and back to his family.
“Rigel 4 arrived off-shore of Struisbaai this morning and at 08h30 this morning, Wednesday, 15th March, our sea rescue craft Spirit of Agulhas rendezvouzed with the Rigel 4 about three miles off-shore of Struisbaai and the fisherman was transferred onto our sea rescue craft and brought to shore and he is on his way home.”
The man was reunited with his family and was able to help rebuild their home
