We never know when we might need the kindness or concern of a stranger, but for one elderly man who collapsed on a busy pavement, that kindness arrived just in time.

Richards Bay, South Africa (04 March 2026) – None of us can predict when we might find ourselves relying on the kindness of a stranger.

This was certainly true for an elderly man who collapsed on a pavement last Monday, unaware that his life would soon depend on the vigilance of a security officer.

Pretty Ndlovu had just stepped out of her office to grab a smoothie when she was approached by Chris Ndunakazi, a security guard on duty. After a quick greeting, Chris urgently pointed out a man he had discovered lying on the pavement with his feet on the road.

“He was worried he might be overrun by a car,” Pretty shared.

Together, they walked towards the man, whom they later found to be 62 years old.

“He woke him up, helped him to get up, and we crossed back. He offered him his chair, as he could barely stand and was shaking. I asked for an ambulance through our control room, which never arrived.

“After an hour and 30 minutes, I decided to take him to the clinic. I reported in our control. The security guard secured him in the back seat,” Pretty says.

The man was medically assessed and assisted at the Brackenham Clinic in Richards Bay by Sister Ngubane and her team.

Sr Ngubane later informed Pretty that the elderly patient was doing a lot better and was even able to walk by himself. It was discovered, however, that he wasn’t from the area and didn’t have a nearby place to go. He was put in contact with the local councillor and seen the next day, looking well and trying to get back home.

“I believe his life was saved. Just want to say thank you to Chris Ndunakazi. He could have just overlooked him. He did his best to assist this man,” Pretty says.

Pretty also extended her gratitude to the incredible nurses who got the man back on his feet.

We couldn’t be prouder or inspired by all who played a part in this unexpectedly touching event.
