Sidewalk Specials is the “Uber” of animal welfare as they don’t have a shelter. Yet they save thousands of lives by sterilisation and rehoming with volunteers.
Sidewalk Specials is a non-profit company that focuses on sterilising animals and rescuing abused animals. They also save animals waiting on euthanasia lists. The organisation credits themselves as the “Uber” of Shelters as they rescue and rehome animals using their volunteer base but do not have any infrastructure.
“We have no shelter! You know how Uber has no cars? Air B&B has no hotels? We use YOUR homes as our shelter! 100% foster based rescue: meaning no overheads, no stressed out shelter dogs, we know our rescues personally and can match them to the right home.”
“We run sterilisation drives! There are too many to save- far, far too many! Stopping them being born into abuse and neglect is the solution! Sterilise your pets, sponsor a sterilisation & don’t even think of supporting breeders!”
During the most recent sterilisation drive, the volunteers worked on 697 animals. They visited the De Doorn farming community which is incredibly poor and has no access to vets or rescue centres.
During the drive, volunteers cut any chains or collars that are not suitable for the animals and give new or previously-loved collars and leads to the families instead. All the work is thanks to mass donations and volunteer involvement. Without which, this amazing initiative would not exist.
Volunteers even hand feed the vets doing operations, they read to the children from the community, they keep a watchful eye on all the drowsy animals to make sure they are ok and they even head out into the community to build fences and shelters for the animals. Just WOW!
We teared up a little at the end of the video seeing so much love being passed along to these animals and their families. You can support Sidewalk Specials by donating here.
