Cool Bananas launched a recycling project prior to the lockdown, collecting bottles that washed down their river onto the beach from inland SA.
Wild Coast, South Africa (21 September 2020) – The village of Tshani in the remote hills of the Wild Coast, has very little access to the outside world. They have had no visitors since the start of lockdown, well no human visitors; there have been loads of visitors that have floated downriver to the village.
Tshani village is located at the mouth of the Mdumbi River. The remote village is located on some of South Africas most beautiful untouched land. Sadly, the river brings with it the filth of inland polluters, leaving villagers to clean up after people they have never seen nor met.
Cool Bananas and Mankosi Surf and Turf, started a recycling project and everyone in the village takes part. It was all put on hold during lockdown but now they are going to use all the glass bottles they have collected, for a community project.
“We have collected champagne bottles, wine bottles, beer bottles, cider, spice gold, brandy, gin, vodka, other spirits and liquor bottles from all around our Village over the last year!!!
The funny thing is that the majority of these brands cannot be purchased within an 80km radius of this Village!!!
We’re hopefully going to be in a position to really do something useful with our ongoing and growing collection soon!!!”
The children in the village have started sorting the bottles by colour and size to make it easier for their project. Take a look at their collection of glass bottles below. It is mindblowing just how much ends up in the rivers and on the beaches of South Africa.
We look forward to seeing what the big project looks like. Stay tuned, we will be sure to keep you updated.
