Sqiniseko Mpontshane, a brilliant 19-year-old from Ndumo in northern KwaZulu-Natal, is proving that age is no barrier to innovation.

KwaZulu Natal, South Africa (11 August 2024) – The Grade 12 learner, Sqiniseko Mpontshane from Mandla Mthethwa School of Excellence has captured the imagination of many with his remarkable invention: an autonomous solar-powered vehicle.

Mpontshane’s achievement is a shining example of what can be accomplished when intelligence meets determination.

His solar electric vehicle features an innovative wireless trailer with a supercharging station for eco-friendly operations.

Sqiniseko is confident that his self-driven solar electric car project will have an impact on the world stage and he also got to showcase his invention at the International Science Technology Engineering Competition earlier this year.

The international event brought together young scientists from around the world to join the competition and test their ability to do innovative research.

Highlighting the self-driving car’s impressive features in an interview, Sqiniseko shared that he was proud of his invention which has driving, electric, renewable energy and solar modes.

A wireless trailer can also be attached to the car without any physical attachments and emits movement from the main car so that they can follow each other. There is also a supercharging station which charges the trailer and the car in less than 10 minutes.

His school also expressed pride in Sqiniseko’s groundbreaking invention, proving that the future of transportation is greener and smarter.
