To honour Joost van der Westhuizen, a South African Rugby hero, South Africans all over the country are putting on their Springbok supporter jersey’s in remembrance of his life.
A private service will be taking place this morning for Joost’s Family and Friends, the casket will then be escorted to Loftus Versfeld where a public memorial service will take place. The memorial will be open to anyone that wishes to attend.
The ceremony will host a variety of guest speakers and some of Joost van der Westhuizens favourite artists will perform a tribute. SA Rugby is encouraging all supporters who cannot attend the ceremony to wear green and gold and the memorial will be televised live on Super Sport 1 from 12:00pm.
“Joost will be remembered as one of the greatest Springboks – not only of his generation, but of all time,” said Mr Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby.
“He was a hero and a role model for so many young rugby players in the early years of professionalism and he taught a generation of South Africans what it meant to be a Springbok. His passion for his country and the Boks will always stand out and he will be sadly missed.”
South Africans all over the country have taken to social media to share pictures of them wearing green and gold and honouring the rugby legend. It is so great to see the country pull together today to honour Joost van der Westhuizen.
