Nicoline du Toit often appears alongside the president during our “family meetings”, using sign language to share his messages; South Africans are uniting to help her through her current health scare.
Pretoria, South Africa (15 February 2022) – Nicoline du Toit is known in many homes throughout South Africa. She often appears on TV alongside the President of South Africa, signing his speeches for the deaf and those with hearing loss.
Nicoline is an ordinary single mother of two with an unusual job. She is a sign language interpreter who makes sure that the deaf community receives all the important information they need from the governmental TV briefings.
Nicoline and her twin sister, Nicolette, were born to deaf parents. They both have full hearing, but because of their parents’ condition, they learned to sign before speaking. It was this that inspired Nicoline to become a sign langiage interpreter. She wanted to support the deaf community. Her dedication to this cause has meant she is one of the top sign language interpreters in the country.
She works as a freelancer, which means that “no work, no pay” applies. As a single mom to two children, she has worked very hard to give them all they need. Her son is in Grade 10, and her daughter, Danielle, got married in 2020 and works as a pre-school teacher. Danielle is one of several people who reached out to Good Morning Angels, to get help for her mom.
Sadly, Nicoline is a Type 1 diabetic who administers insulin daily. During recent medical checks, she was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer and she is developing severe cataracts. Nicoline has been diligent with her medical aid and thankfully, they are covering most of her medical expenses however, there is a lapse on some of the costs that Nicoline needs to cover herself.
As a freelancer, she does not always have an income, making navigating the medical bills particularly tricky. Danielle says she needs to pay a co-payment of R15 000 for her eye operations – without which she will not be able to drive herself to work.
“No matter what personal struggles she might be going through she will always make time to assist the Deaf community and friends and family without thinking twice.” – Danielle van Staden
The Good Morning Angels Fund will assist Nicolene with R30,000. The money will be used to cover the co-payment of her cataract operation before she starts her cancer treatment in March, as well as other costs related to her diabetes.
Her story has moved many and they have rallied to support her through this tough time. You can reach out to support by contacting the Good Morning Angels here.
