Five incredible students from the St John’s College Academy took part in the Further Studies Mathematics and have achieved the best mathematics results.

Johannesburg, South Africa (18 January 2023) – Philani Mgquba, Zandile Habile, Zinhle Habile, Sihle Ndleleni, and Tshepang Mokoto were able to take Further Studies Mathematics thanks to the St John’s College Academy.

These young men who attend Highlands North Boys’ High and all come from the surrounding areas of Hillbrow, Yeoville, and Berea, are part of the St John’s College Academy, where they have been able to take Further Studies Mathematics as a subject.

The Academy is an after-school enrichment programme that takes place three afternoons a week to give students more in-depth studies for mathematics, physical sciences and English.

These budding young mathematicians were offered the opportunity to take Further Studies Mathematics (former AP Maths) to stretch their mathematical brains, which is exciting as it is a subject not offered at their school.

Zandile Habile and Tshepang Mokoto have attended the St John’s College Academy for the past three years. Tshepang achieved a Further Studies Maths Standard mark of 84%, while Zandile earned an 80%.

“The course was challenging, and I didn’t think I could do it, but I did it! Even though we couldn’t join our friends on Friday afternoons for two years as we were attending lessons, it was worth it.” – Zandile Habile

“Taking Further Studies Maths made my Core Maths a lot easier. I am grateful for the opportunity, and I am proud of my result.” – Tshepang Mokoto

The St John’s College Academy strives to develop confidence, empowering boys to achieve the matric results required for tertiary education and enabling them to become meaningful citizens in their communities. In addition to subject tuition, the Academy boys are taught life skills to help them reach their goals.

“I am incredibly proud of these fine students. Their commitment to our lessons, enthusiasm and hard work culminated in these outstanding results. ” – Kim Jacobs, Further Studies Mathematics Teacher

St John’s College is currently celebrating its 125th year, and all the young men that have excelled academically. They are also looking outside of school academics and have been highlighting all the past students who have an exciting 2023 ahead of them.
