When government officials make headlines, it’s often for all the wrong reasons – but every now and then, a story surfaces that restores faith in the power of public service and simple human kindness.

Western Cape, South Africa (31 December 2024) – Let’s be honest: stories about government officials often dominate headlines for all the wrong reasons. But not here, not on Good Things Guy. Today, we’re celebrating an incredible act of kindness that reminds us of the good happening around us, often unnoticed.

Annelene Oberholzer recently shared a heartwarming post about her experience with the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Officer Lance Walduck.

On a quiet Saturday evening around 7:15pm, Annelene found herself in a stressful situation when her classic motorcycle ran out of fuel in a spot where she felt unsafe. Don’t judge her – classic bikes like the ones she was riding sometimes don’t come with fuel gauges.

But luckily, Traffic Officer Lance Walduck, who exemplified what public service should be about, was quick on the scene to assist.

Following proper protocol, he contacted his headquarters before heading to a nearby petrol station to fetch fuel. Upon returning, he ensured her bike was running smoothly and stayed with her until she felt completely safe.

Annelene’s gratitude was clear: “Thank you, City of Cape Town, for employing people who care.”

It might seem like a small thing, but sometimes, the smallest things make the biggest difference. Imagine how vulnerable Annelene must have felt, stranded in an unsafe area. Officer Walduck’s kindness wasn’t just about fuel; it was about compassion, empathy, and ensuring someone felt seen and supported.

And this story is more than just a good deed. It highlights the power of kindness in unexpected moments. It’s a reminder that people like Officer Walduck are out there – quietly going above and beyond their duties to make the world a safer, better place.

It’s these moments that keep us inspired and hopeful. Good things are happening all around us, and sometimes, they’re just a fuel run away.
