A teacher who was overcharged while on Hockey tour, shares a simple story of how his faith in South Africa was restored!

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa – Reinhard de Klerk is a teacher at Maragon Ruimsig in Roodepoort and was recently on tour with the hockey team in Pietermaritzburg when an act of kindness restored his faith in South Africa!

There was a mistake made with his restaurant bill which he didn’t even pick up, but an incredible South African did, and she went to great lengths to “make it right”.

“I need to highlight what a great country South Africa can still be. We are so overwhelmed with negativity every day on social media, so I am sharing my very awesome experience tonight.”

De Klerk is currently on hockey tour in Pietermaritzburg. They had a meal voucher to the value of R1430 for the hockey boys and coaches to eat supper at Boulder Creek Spur Steak Ranch. The team spent the exact amount of the voucher, and then the teacher added a 10% tip for the waitress Fortunate, which he paid for on his card.

“She accidentally charged the full amount on the card and not just the 10% tip. I did not check, assuming only the tip was put through. We walked back to our hotel, and I blissfully fell asleep.”

De Klerk was woken at 22:54 by a knock on the hotel door, to find Fortunate and Sabelo from Boulder Creek Spur with the cash that they had overcharged on his card.

“Spur Steak Ranches I do not know how you reward or acknowledge people who go out of their way to be helpful, honest and hard-working like these two employees of yours. Can I just say outstanding (apart from giving me a helluva fright that time of night, being on tour and all) you guys are amazing, may you be blessed!”

Francois Naude, also known as SuperTeacher, heard about the story and explained why something that might seem so trivial is actually a massive deal!

“This is a big deal! Teachers (and principals) are often overwhelmed when travelling with groups of learners. Checking if the correct amount was charged for payment would be the last thing on my mind if I had a group of teenage hockey players in a restaurant.

Fortunate (such an apt name in this circumstance) and Boulder Creek Spur did what few others in their position would have done. You saved the organisers a large amount of admin and anxiety, and we all know that teachers don’t need more admin or anxiety!”

This exemplary customer service is a breath of fresh air in a world where customer service is often neglected.

“Fortunate and Boulder Creek Spur Steak Ranch deserve to be rewarded for going above and beyond. Next time I’m in the area I’d definitely pop in for a meal. I encourage all teachers, parents and learners to do the same.”
