Teach The Nation fellows (prospective student teachers with degrees/diplomas) are able to enrol, at no cost, in a Postgraduate Certificate in Education – this is how you can join in the opportunity.

South Africa (11 September 2020) – Leading teacher education provider, STADIO Faculty of Education (formerly known as Embury), is excited to announce their partnership with Non-Governmental Organisation, Teach The Nation. The partnership will see Teach The Nation fellows (prospective student teachers with degrees/diplomas) enrolling in a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in order to fully qualify as teachers.

Teach The Nation’s mandate is to build exceptional leaders to help transform the inequality that characterises the education system. Following an innovative two-year fellowship, Teach The Nation fellows then become a talent pool from which underserviced schools in the Western Cape can select to fill teacher vacancies.

Professor Patrick Bean, Executive Dean of STADIO Faculty of Education, notes that the collaboration with Teach The Nation points towards a larger priority for the tertiary education provider to align themselves with community-orientated partners.

“We are committed to developing quality teachers from the community, for the community, which takes place in the community; and we are grateful that we’re able to provide the platform to do so,” he states. “With the exceptional work done by Teach The Nation to not only provide quality educators to underprivileged schools, but to also train them to become leaders within the community, we believe we have found a partner who aligns with our vision,” Professor Bean adds.

The PGCE qualification was first introduced by STADIO Faculty of Education at the start of 2020. It is aimed at students with an undergraduate degree or appropriate diploma wishing to develop the knowledge and skills to become fully-qualified classroom teachers.

The Teach The Nation cohort of fellows will be equally split between those who already have a teaching qualification and graduate professionals from diverse academic backgrounds, who have received a calling to become involved in social change through education. The collaboration between Stadio’s School of Education and Teach The Nation will see these fellows obtaining the official qualification necessary to become teachers.

Recruited fellows will be able to enrol for the PGCE qualification at no cost to themselves, with classes starting in February 2021. Additional skills for these fellows will be provided through Teach The Nation leadership development programme.

STADIO Faculty of Education’s PGCE qualification will be delivered via different modes of learning incorporated into a ‘flexible hybrid learning experience’. This learning model allows the student to select, on a weekly basis, the mode that best suits their situation. This includes, for example, live learning events at a campus or live streamed lectures at remote learning centres. Other modes of learning include live webinars on students’ laptops or smartphones as well as recorded material loaded on YouTube. According to Professor Bean, the flexible hybrid model offers community members an opportunity to study towards a teaching qualification without having to undertake an expensive re-location to a city or metro, thereby allowing them to continue to meet their family and community responsibilities.

“At Teach The Nation, we come across a number of talented graduate professionals who are looking to change course and are motivated and excited to be inside a classroom. For many, this is their way to contribute to the growth of the country and to truly play a role in societal change,” says David Oliphant, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at Teach The Nation. “To be able to partner with STADIO Faculty of Education for a PGCE is a significant milestone in our offerings.”
