In just 4 days, the Love Notties community project was able to fill potholes along an 8km stretch of road in the Midlands – A huge success for the small community.

Midlands, South Africa (03 August 2023) – Loteni Road in the Midlands now has 8km of repaired road thanks to the Love Notties community.

The Love Notties community project is based in the Midlands. This area is a popular tourist route with the Midlands Meander and it is a great source of income for many small businesses. Keeping the area clean and pretty, adds to the experience for tourists. This is why Love Notties was born, to keep everyone happy.

Love Notties is a community-founded project that addresses and works on any issues the community faces. They previously chose the local police station as the community project and worked towards making the gardens beautiful again.

Now they are tackling the potholes on Loteni Road. In their Love Notties newsletter, the team shared how they managed to fill 8km of potholes in 4 days thanks to community involvement.

“Residents of the small town of Nottingham Road in the KZN midlands decided they would no longer wait for KZN Department of Transport . They rolled up their sleeves and decided to fix their own roads. DOT is failing in one of its primary obligations. Well done and thanks to Love Notties and the NRLA.”

Thank you to our Councillor Sandile Mnikhathi for highlighting our plight!

What started off as painting of potholes along the R103 from the freeway to the village, grew into a Pothole filling project led by the Nottingham Road Land Owners and assisted by Love Notties… the success of this project ignited the local residents to fundraise in order to fill as many potholes as possible! The Lotheni Road residents who were greatly affected by a particularly bad stretch of road banded together and raised enough funds to help set up a team who would fill their stretch of road.

This incredible team have managed to fill potholes over 8 km on the Loteni Road in 4 days!

First the holes are scraped and cleaned of loose debris, then a bitumen emulsion is poured in the base. The hole is filled with tar and more emulsion poured on top and compacted.

The condition of the roads are generally very poor and advice from engineers and roads specialists determined this process to be the best option at this stage. We have 9 graduates from the Dream Centre in Notties working on this project. This was hard and dirty physical work! Incredibly impressed by their hard work ethic and if anyone needs staff, please contact Sam from the Dream Centre.”
