Sam Warren was awarded the Hero Award from Life saving Western Province after attempting to save the life of a drowning victim at Big Bay beach.

Cape Town, South Africa – Sam Warren has been hailed a hero for his unwavering dedication to saving a life. The Camps Bay High School student was visiting his granny when a harrowing rescue took place.

While at his grandmother’s beach house, he saw two members of the public pulling a drowning person from the Big Bay beach. He quickly jumped into action and ran down to the beach to offer his assistance. He saw the people struggling to perform life-saving CPR and promptly took charge.

Sam started performing CPR after assessing the victim. He noted the victim had foam coming from the mouth and was vomiting. He also checked for a pulse and found it to be intermittent, but the victim was not breathing.

Sam was joined by two lifeguards from the Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, and together they spent the next hour performing CPR in rotation. They were joined by emergency services who worked on the victim while they continued their CPR rotation. Sadly after an hour of no improvement, the drowning victim was declared dead.

It was a life-changing moment for Sam, who tried his very best to save the life of the person in front of him. Sam is a Grade 9 student at Camps Bay High School and faced one of his most stressful situations in life so far.

His actions were rewarded, however, and he was awarded one of the highest honours in life-saving: the Hero Award from Life Saving Western Province. They commended Sam on his efforts in taking charge of the situation and performing CPR.

“Well done, Sam – we know this was a very difficult situation for you but you can be very proud of your efforts – as are we.” – Camps Bay High School

Well done to Grade 9 pupil, Sam Warren, who has been awarded one of the highest honours: the Hero Award from Life saving Western Province. Whilst on holiday at his grandmother’s beach house Sam was alerted to the fact that two members of the public had pulled a drowning person from the sea. He ran out onto the beach where the two members of the public who had pulled the victim from the water were attempting to perform CPR on the victim. Sam took charge of the resuscitation, made more difficult by the rapidly rising tide and the gathering crowd. The patient was vomiting and issuing copious froth, he had an intermittent pulse but was not breathing. Sam was joined by two lifeguards from Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club. They joined Sam in rotation, allowing the members of the public to retire. About 15 minutes after that, the paramedics arrived and the victim was moved out of the tidal zone to the pavement, where all three of the lifeguards continued CPR in rotation with the paramedics. After approximately an hour the patient was unfortunately declared dead. Lifesaving Western Province commends Sam on his efforts in taking charge of the situation and performing CPR. Well done, Sam – we know this was a very difficult situation for you but you can be very proud of your efforts – as are we.
