A group of 60 teens got to hike in the Heidelberg Nature Reserve as part of a fun day out to learn about the environment.

Western Cape, South Africa (22 February 2024) – The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department hosted a group of young people on an adventure hike in the Heidelberg Nature Reserve.

The 60 young people, from Kuils River and Kalkfontein, spent the morning in nature learning more about their environment.

‘Being out in nature gives our young people an opportunity to be away from their immediate circumstances and helps them to experience healthy surroundings. Our beautiful reserves are perfect for being outdoors and allows children to be more independent, boosting their self-confidence and esteem,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Service and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

The department’s Outdoor Adventure Programme targets youth aged 13-35, particularly focusing on high schoolers and out-of-school youth, aiming to offer outdoor recreation opportunities not readily available at the recreation centre.

The outdoor hiking or nature walk experience is often their first exposure to these types of activities. The programme’s objectives include promoting a recreationally active lifestyle, and providing fun and educational adventure activities.
