The Othandweni After-School Program helps students focus on getting their homework done, understanding school subjects, expanding their opportunities and getting active within the community.

Roodepoort, South Africa (26 February 2025) – Our team had the pleasure of meeting Xolani Thwala this past week, who is the Founder and Program Director of the Othandweni After-School Program in Roodepoort. Xolani and his team aim to bring hope and opportunity to students who take part in the Othandweni After-School Program.

The Othandweni After-School Program is more than just an initiative—it’s a safe space where children learn, grow, and dream. It’s based within the heart of the community, helping more students reach the resources on offer on any given day. This grassroots programme provides access to homework support, sports and a feeding scheme.

“Our program is built on the belief that every child deserves access to quality education, mentorship, and enrichment activities. Through academics and e-learning, we provide tutoring, digital literacy, and a growing focus on STEM education to prepare young minds for the future.

Our sports and recreation program keeps children active, fostering teamwork, discipline, and confidence. Through arts and culture, we encourage self-expression and creativity, ensuring that talent is nurtured and celebrated.

Beyond these, we run a feeding scheme to ensure no child learns on an empty stomach, and we offer life skills programs to equip our youth with the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges.”

Xolani shared that they have some exciting events coming up that will give the students even more opportunities. This includes adding a literacy program to local schools, taking current students on an outing in celebration of Heritage Day and a Youth Day initiative which will see the installation of bookshelves.

“At Othandweni, we believe in the power of community, and we’re always looking for partners, volunteers, and supporters to help us expand our impact. If you’d like to get involved, reach out and be part of something truly meaningful!” – Xolani Thwala

If you would like to follow along or support, you can do so here. They are also looking for volunteers, so reach out here.
