The SpringBots are once again working to fly the flag internationally at the upcoming FIRST Global Challenge taking place in Singapore.

South Africa (14 September 2023) – Every year, the SpringBots get ready to share their robotics skills with the world at the FIRST Global Challenge, an international robotics competition. This year the event is being hosted in Singapore.

Team SpringBots South Africa is taking robotics to the future youth! The robotics team was established in 2018 and now represents SA on the international stage of all things STEM.

The team’s core mission is to provide equal access to education, skills and knowledge centred around STEM.  STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The SpringBots is a non-profit, founded by Mikhaeel Reddy in 2018 as a way to boost youth participation in global STEM challenges.

Last year, an all-girls team went to represent South Africa in Geneva, Switzerland.

The FIRST Global Robotics World Championships is an annual Robotics competition that invites teams from around the world to compete on an international stage, whilst raising awareness about global problems and technological developments. Over 160 countries gather to build robots, form international relationships and try to solve global problems by using skills learnt from STEM education.

This year the theme is Hydrogen Horizons.

“As our dependence on energy continues to grow, it becomes increasingly important to innovate the solutions that will ensure a cleaner and more equitable energy future around the world. Renewable energy comes from natural sources that are continually replenished, including the sun, wind, heat within the earth, and water. This year’s theme calls on FIRST Global teams to reimagine the future of energy and create more sustainable ways to power our planet.

The 2023 FIRST Global Challenge focuses specifically on the role of hydrogen in the planet’s renewable energy and reduced carbon future. Hydrogen-based energy technologies allow for enhanced methods of carrying and storing the energy generated from renewables.”

This year, the SpringBots is made up by:

  • Reagile Motudu Rakgahla – Team Captain
  • Amahle-Amambo Mkhize – Team Spokesperson
  • Keashna Dinna – Programmer / Coder
  • Matome Lizette Shwatja – Builder
  • Mufhatutshedzi Obert Junior Nemutanzhela – Programmer / Coder
  • Bongiwe Nghlovu – Builder
  • Mukondi Sinugo – Builder

As always, Ahmeel Reddy, Mikhaeel Reddy and Jared Reddy are present to mentor these young minds through the competition as they have each had the chance to take part over the years.
