A new report investigated the languages that countries around the world are most interested in learning! Here are South Africa’s:

South Africa (19 July 2024) — It’s a pretty exciting time in history to be a lover of languages. Considering that the resources to learn a new language (or two, or three) have never been more accessible thanks to language-learning apps and owls like Duolingo (with 83 monthly users), teachers making platforms like TikTok their virtual classrooms and Artificial Intelligence, it’s no surprise that the world has become far more connected as language-barriers slowly slim down.

South Africa is a unique country when it comes to languages. With 12 official languages and many more unofficial ones, we’re a certified melting pot of linguistic treasures.

So, with all this access and options to dive into languages from our own country and the world beyond, which languages are South Africans most eager to learn?

A July report by WorldTips went on an extensive search to compile the top 50 most spoken languages globally. It then tallied the number of Google searches for variations of ‘learn x language’ (translated into 119 languages) in every country all in the great pursuit to figure out which languages different countries were most interested in learning.

Here’s What the 2024 Report Found:

  • People in Canada can’t wait to learn French
  • Australians are on a quest to learn Japanese
  • Many Asian countries including India and Sri Lanka want to learn Korean
  • The United Kingdom, on the other hand, wants to learn English…

For South Africa, the top picks were (drumroll) isiZulu and Swahili in that order!

This means that most South Africans are searching ‘learn Zulu’ or ‘learn Swahili’ in one way or another, with Zulu being our top spoken language.
