Dr Xolani Hadebe matriculated from a rural school in Mpumalanga and dreamed of becoming a doctor but his dreams were dashed so he became a till packer
Xolani Hadebe’s dedication is being hailed as something truly remarkable and special. The medical graduate made even his university so proud that they took to social media to share his story.
On Facebook, many users are reading Xolani’s story and feeling proud of a fellow South African that refused to give up.
Xolani’s dreams were dashed when he was rejected from all the universities he had applied to. He wanted to be a doctor but just didn’t have the money to pursue his dreams.
He refused to give up and got a job as a till packer at his local SPAR. The determined South African used his job as a stepping stone to greatness and worked as hard as he could to save!
“My mother was a domestic worker, she never went to school and there was no way she could afford to send me to varsity. My father passed away when I was very young, so the only way I could make sure that I go to varsity was through a scholarship.”
Over time he saved enough and was accepted to study at Stellenbosch University. His family stood by his side through it all. His single mother had supported him through life and his gogo who called him Doctor all through his life. Before she passed away, he made a promise to her that he would become a doctor.
“I honestly believe it was my family who kept me going, such as my mother who sacrificed so much for us. My grandmother also used to call me doctor. Before she passed away, I made a promise I would be a doctor.”
Through hard work and determination, Hadebe’s dream came true and he kept his promise to his gogo. He recently graduated and can now proudly call himself Doctor Xolani Hadebe.
Doctor Hadebe is an inspiration to all those that don’t think their dreams will ever come true. Take every rejection, place it in your back pocket and use it as fuel to fire up towards those dreams, work even harder and never give up.
