Andrew Sokolic shared the story of how he needed to send the family pig to the market as drought was preventing him from keeping her but thankfully his community saved the day!
Karoo, South Africa – Andrew Sokolic had to send his pig, Tilly, to auction to raise funds which would allow him to feed the rest of his livestock. He wanted to highlight the plight of the farmer during the drought and was blown away by the response he received.
Andrew shared the post about Tilly to the Water Shedding Western Cape group, and the group members quickly offered to send funds to buy food for his animals instead of selling Tilly.
“I posted a photo of our pig that was ready to be taken to auction this morning with the intention of highlighting what farmers have to do during the terrible drought in the karoo. I didn’t realise it would spur people on to wanting to help and I’m really humbled and grateful to all of you who reached out to assist us. There are too many of you to thank individually.
There are farmers who are worse off and who don’t just sell one animal to raise money to buy animal feed, but have to sell their entire herd and their livelihood is abruptly ended.”
Within 24-hours, Andrew was able to bring Tilly right back home and offload her nearby her friends.
“I just wanted to say thank you to all of those who saved Tilly from auction. She was happy to get out of the bakkie and she’s back with her friends now. I really don’t know what to say apart from thank you to all those who cared and showed so much compassion and support. I’m pretty emotional about the overwhelming response and I’m going to get a bakkie load of treats for the farm animals now. Thank you so much”
