Two friends launched a campaign to raise funds for a new electric wheelchair for a bright young lady that deserves the world, they are doing a triathlon to make a difference.

Tameron Nel was born with cerebral palsy and has been living in a poor township area of Missionvale in Port Elizabeth. Alrie Velleman and Zara Schoeman, two friends with a passion for triathlon, met Tameron aka Tammy, a little while back. They were deeply inspired by her zest for life and joyful nature.

The friends were busy preparing for the Ironman 5150 Triathlon and decided to dedicate their race to Tammy. They started raising funds to buy Tammy an electric wheelchair. Their goal is to raise R32,000 which will cover the costs of a new wheelchair.

They now have R12000 left to raise and are dedicating their next race to the final stretch. They are hoping to go above their target and also raise money towards an education fund for her.

“I run because I can.” When I get tired, I remember those who can’t run and what they would give to have this simple gift I take for granted, and I run harder for them. I know they would have done the same for me.”

We are “Tri-ing” for Tammy! Our goal is to raise R12 000 towards a new electrical wheelchair for a 12-year-old girl named Tameron Nel with cerebral palsy. She grew up in the desperately poor township area of Missionvale on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth and despite her circumstances, is the most joyful, vibrant little girl.”

Healthcare workers at the Missionvale Care Centre’s OVC (orphaned and vulnerable children) unit met Tammy when she was 9 years old. She had not gone to school and lived with her grandmother. The Care Centre took her under their wing and with the help of Sister Annemarie van der Merwe, she was enrolled at Northern Lights School. She immediately excelled and loves learning. Maths is her favourite subject and she says she wants to become a doctor one day.”

Alrie and Zara are now training for the Ironman 70.3, taking place in January 2019. If you would like to help, you can help these ladies get Tammy a wheelchair by donating to their fund here.
