As nearly 200 St Mary’s DSG Kloof former school girls united to walk down memory lane for this year’s ‘Old Girls Day’, one trio were the talk of the school grounds. For them, this wasn’t any ordinary reunion, but their 70-year school reunion as the class of 1954!
Kloof, South Africa (12 August 2024) — By the time a 10-year school reunion rolls around, one thought will echo throughout the minds of the entire celebrating class regardless of their fondness toward their school days—‘Where did the time go?’ Now take that feeling and multiply it by seven, and you might get an inkling of what one trio felt upon reuniting at St Mary’s DSG Kloof for their 70-year school reunion!
On 3 August, St Mary’s welcomed perfect weather and many former school girls (170 to be exact) for their 2024 ‘Old Girls’ Day’. Some had travelled from all over the world, others from different generations. But all ventured on the same path that Saturday—straight down memory lane.
Amongst many reunions, Hazel Bramley (nee Mitchell), Patricia Meyer (nee McLeod) and Wendy McHardy (nee Deal) stood as a trio of particular interest as they united in delight to celebrate their 70-year school reunion. All three had been part of the Class of 1954.
Hazel and Patricia nostalgically recalled the beginning of their school days, chuckling at their first encounter with one another when they were just two eight-year-old girls at the train station headed to the school for the first time.
Much has naturally changed since they were boarders at school, but the opportunity to revisit the school today with so many other generations of schoolgoers in tow offered a rare experience.
Speaking of their reunion day, the trio shared touching sentiments:
“It was such a happy and loving day and it brought back many happy memories,” Wendy says. “I thank St Mary’s for all they gave and taught me—to love myself and, in doing that, one loves and cares for others. I’m so proud to be a St Mary’s girl.”
For Patricia, the day was perfectly summed up as “memories are made of this.”
