Theo Winckler and his friend stop along the roadside to take cold drinks to the road maintenance guys as a thank you for all they do each day.
Theo Winckler and his friend wanted to express their gratitude to a group of road maintenance workers that work along the stretch of road they travel every day. The group continue to work daily without thanks and Theo wanted to change that.
They have always wondered who the people were that worked on the roadside, so stopping with some refreshments was a way for them to find out a little more about the team.
“How does one experience a sense of peace and gratitude? Drive the R44 from Gordon’s Bay through the beautiful fynbos, mountains and sea. I drive this road daily and in addition to the beautiful scenery, one also notes that there is no dirt, the grass is always cut neatly and dangerous stones are removed early in the morning. Local residents refer with great pride and gratitude to their continued conservation.”
Samuel Roji, a resident of Hanover in the Karoo leads the team which includes Sam Makhendlana, Wiseman Lentsa, Sandile Qwaka, Luvuyo Msengane and Jabulani Dlamini.
Theo’s friend decided to call Peter, the manager of KEW Maintenance who does the contract work. Peter was very surprised to receive the call saying that they never get calls of thanks.
“We here in Hangklip and thousands of national and international tourists are very proud of the excellent work you do every day to keep the scenic route in such a perfect condition.”
“Next time you drive the road and notice the workers by the road – wave at them and show only gratitude and kindness to these honest and hard workers.”
We love seeing people take notice of those who work hard to make South Africa a lovely place to live. We agree with Theo, next time you see a hardworking South African, give them a great big thank you.
