A Capetonian left his wallet full of money and dollars in an Uber by accident over the weekend… what happened afterwards restored his faith in humanity.

Clive Smith, a Capetonian living in Yellowwood Park rarely carried a wallet with him, and rarely caught Ubers.

“I have a thing about carrying a wallet and often get asked why I don’t carry one, my answer always being that if you lose your wallet you lose everything in it at once! However, these last few months I’ve taken to using a wallet again.”

On Sunday afternoon, Smith realised he had lost his wallet with his bank cards, ID card, drivers licence along with cash and a large amount of dollars that he hadn’t exchanged yet due the exchange rate.

“When I realised my wallet was missing, after turning the house upside down, checking the garden and breaking into a cold sweat thinking about the dollars and even worse, going through the motions of renewing my ID card as well as my licence.”

His holiday had suddenly become somewhat more expensive than he had planned!!

Smith’s daughter, Kaylee, had suggested that perhaps they should contact the Uber driver from the night before.

On Saturday night, after a Kloof housewarming party, Smith, his daughter and son-in-law decided to catch an Uber home to Yellowwood Park. That is when they met Lungisani, the uber driver.

Kaylee made the call to Lungisani who indeed had the wallet and had been trying to get hold of Smith.

“Lungisani apologised profusely for not calling on Kaylees number (she had made the booking) as he had no airtime and even more that he couldn’t bring it from Hammarsdale where he lives as he was low on fuel, which he had mentioned on Saturday night.”

The Uber driver insisted that Smith shouldn’t go all the way to Hammarsdale to meet him so made arrangements to meet in Kloof instead.

When Smith arrived at the meeting spot, Lungisani handed over the wallet and insisted that Smith check that everything was in it.

“Honesty can be a rare thing nowadays and he had every opportunity to say that he had picked up other passengers after us so did not see any wallet !! What a gentleman and a scholar !!

Well done Lungisani on flying the Uber flag high and on your own maintaining your own integrity!”
