UCT students have innovated life-changing water catchment device. The invention is perfect for catching every drop of shower water and reusing it.
A group of UCT students have adapted a product that could be somewhat life-changing during the drought. They researched the concept during their final year assignment called Strategic Thinking. They had to come up with a solution to an existing problem in the market.
The group adapted an existing design of a water catchment system for the shower, they called it the Shower Savvy. They did this by focussing on the drought and realising that catching shower water in a bucket was effective but there was still a large amount that ended up down the drain.
The Shower Savvy director Emma Sham said they focussed on how other countries were dealing with similar problems and developing solutions, they adapted that to their design.
The device is a Jerry can look-alike that one can stand on while taking a shower, which stores up about 10 litres of grey water to be used for flushing toilets.
The students confirmed that their design was in fact inspired by the Gris water saving system.
According to Emma, they are now trying to make the product commercially available and at an affordable price. The students are looking for advice from people who have experience in the plastic and fibreglass manufacturing industries.
We cannot wait to see this incredible innovation being used in the South African market and saving large amounts of water. Hopefully, it will be used in all provinces and not only drought regions.
