The Santa Shoebox Project is hard at work year-round to make life a little more magical for as many underprivileged children as possible. Now, thanks to their Virtual Santa Shoebox campaign, it’s possible for even more kindness to go around to those in hard-to-reach rural locations!

South Africa (01 November 2023) —The Santa Shoebox Project has snowballed incredibly from its humble beginnings in 2006, where a modest 180 shoeboxes showed people how much the little things can matter—especially over the festive season where so many underprivileged children in our country go without the bare necessities, let alone gifts.

Merging gifts and essentials is the heart of the Santa Shoebox Project, and with 17 years in action and over a million shoebox donations to proudly report in SA and Namibia, the project continues to expand; and this festive season, Virtual Santa Shoeboxes are also on the Project’s wishlist with a special campaign for Santa’s helpers.

Traditionally, creating a Santa Shoebox meant assembling a box of goodies with educational supplies, sweets, a toy, an outfit or clothing item, and some toiletries.

Some people do this in groups to make up 20 or more boxes a year with a few extras, while others assemble and decorate their own personalised boxes.

But, thanks to the Virtual Santa Shoeboxes initiative (VSS), more underprivileged children in hard-to-reach areas can enjoy the joy of the most festive shoebox around!  Through the virtual initiative, Santa Shoebox Project’s volunteers make up the boxes and disperse them to rural areas. This matters because children who live in rural locations don’t have as many donors as those in mainstream areas, but this should hardly mean they’re left off Santa’s list.

How to Jump on the Virtual Santa Shoeboxes Train

To gain more momentum for VSS, the Project has launched a crowdfunding campaign to make sure that more holiday magic goes around. Anyone who wants to make a child’s festive season the joyful time it should be can support the initiative here, and sit tight with the happy knowledge that the essentials and even a few additional surprises will head to their rightful home.
