A group of volunteers donated their time and sewing skills to pack maternity bags to support mothers in the Vaal area.

Vaal, South Africa (23 April 2024) – A group of volunteers got together and managed to pack a total of 200 maternity packs for the Grace Factory Vaal.

The Grace Factory, an NPO that gives practical assistance to moms and babies in need during the first few weeks of motherhood and infancy, stresses the importance of doing so. The organisation packs the items into gift sets and delivers them to new moms in government hospitals all over South Africa. The packs consist of basic necessities such as clothes, blankets, toiletries, nappies and a few things for mom.

What makes these days so special is that many of the items packed into the packs are handmade on the day, putting sewing skills to the test.

“We absolutely loved having volunteers of all ages join us for our Packing Day on 20th April. šŸ’›

We packed 200 maternity packs for vulnerable mothers and their babies, and we couldn’t have done it without our amazing volunteers, donors and sponsors!

Every piece of clothing was donated by very kind individuals, and then sorted, washed and prepacked into beautiful sets.

Blankets were either cut and overlocked, or beautifully crocheted. Baby beanies, booties and little jerseys were knitted and made with love.

Hundreds of reusable breast pads were cut, sewn and made from scratch. Soft toys were beautifully crocheted.
This is the kind of love and care that our volunteers put in to make sure that every mother feels loved, appreciated and valued when receiving her maternity pack.”

They will soon start preparations for the 2024 Mandela Day. People are welcome to send donations, and some women even crochet beanies, booties, blankets and other adorable premature baby items. Not only does the organisation welcome donors, but they also welcome volunteers to help pack the packs and hand them out at the hospitals.

The Grace Factory will happily accept any of the following items:

  • New or preloved (gently used) baby clothing from 0-24 months, including vests, beanies and socks
  • New or preloved (gently used) baby blankets, swaddles, sleep sacks, etc.
