While university students aspire to great heights, many face the daily struggle of hunger, a crisis that demands immediate attention.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (14 August 2024) – Behind the closed doors of student res rooms lies a struggle many people may not be aware of. One which sees many students from disadvantaged backgrounds go to bed with little to no food while striving for academic excellence.

To address the growing issue, Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has launched an urgent initiative, the WSU NO! to Student Hunger Campaign, to tackle the critical issue of food insecurity among its students.

“Many of our financially disadvantaged students, who are not covered by NSFAS funding, face significant hardships that affect their well-being and academic success.

“At WSU, we believe that no student should go hungry. Unfortunately, many of our students face food insecurity due to financial challenges. This can have devastating effects on their health, well-being, and ability to succeed academically. The WSU Institutional Student Representative Council (ISRC) has recognised this issue and is leading the charge to ensure that our students receive the support they need,” said WSU Institutional Student Representative Council president Indiphile Mgaba.

The campaign seeks to raise R2.2 million to bolster the existing R800,000 fund allocated by the ISRC and Vice-Chancellor’s Office. This combined total of R3 million will be used to distribute food parcels to more than 3,000 students in dire need.

Indiphile calls on local communities, businesses, alumni, and potential donors to support this vital campaign.

“Your contributions can make a real difference, whether through financial donations or in-kind contributions such as groceries. Your donation will not only help bridge the funding gaps and support our students against hunger, but it will also enhance their lives and academic success.”
