Gandalf was rescued in December 2023 after his home was engulfed during a shack fire. He was rescued from incredible cruelty, and now he is on his road to recovery.

Cape Town, South Africa (20 March 2024) — In the chaos of putting out a devastating shack fire in Seawinds, near Vrygrond, on December 26, 2023, Gandalf and his friend Freya were discovered having escaped the flames but not the cruelty often found in communities gripped by poverty.

“Although they miraculously escaped the flames, the disaster marked the end of a miserable and painful existence. Afflicted with advanced cases of both sarcoptic and demodectic mange, their skin resembled a crusty mess of infection. Infested with ticks and fleas and on the brink of starvation, their collective life story had been a heartbreaking tale of neglect.”

The pair were taken to the TEARS Veterinary Hospital, where they immediately began their journey of medical treatment and rehabilitation.

“Each passing day witnessed the revival of their personalities, accompanied by the gradual regrowth of their fur. Assisting with their healing transformation, Hill’s Pet Nutrition Prescription Diet Derm Complete ensured Gandalf and Freya received the best nutrition to flourish from the inside out.”

Freya was adopted 2 months after their rescue, now its Gandalf’s turn. TEARS is working to raise his public profile in the hope of finding him a loving forever home.

“This affectionate, 5 year old boy has a lot of love to catch up on! He adores cuddles and scratches, and now that he has fully healed, his frolicking, playful side is emerging, accompanied by cute little howls when he’s having a good time.

Gandalf travels well in the car, walks well on a lead and is good when off lead. Occasionally energetic but mostly gentle and calm, he’s a friendly and cheerful boy. He’s good with other dogs and loves people – he hasn’t met a person he doesn’t like. Gandalf longs to be your faithful sidekick and just enjoy life by your side.”

Gandalf is up for adoption, you can find out more here.
