Western Cape, South Africa (04 February 2023) – Caleb Swanepoel lost his leg to a great white shark but his outlook on life, and his way of dealing with what has happened to him, will leave you in awe.

The soon-to-be 28-year-old was a young acting student with a love of the outdoors when his life changed forever at the age of 20.

The South African was bodysurfing in the sea during a family holiday when he was attacked by a great white shark, which pulled him underwater and severed his right leg above the knee. He was able to swim to shore with the help of his brother Sandy before being airlifted to the hospital. Amazingly Caleb was on crutches within three days and spent a mere ten days in the hospital – going back into the ocean to conquer his fears only three weeks after the attack.

His life became a headlong rush to succeed and achieve. This short film follows him as he slows down to process his trauma while learning to free dive.

“The ocean took something away from me but it also gave me something back”.

Swanepoel has gone on to become a South African Para Surfing Champion four times, a WP Para Surfing Champion, National Para Swimming Champion and landed in the top 3 at the “South Africa for Adaptive Crossfit” Open.
