Wedding Budget

A businessman in India spent his daughters wedding budget on building 90 homes for the homeless. Instead of becoming bridezilla she was honoured by the gift

Ajay Munot is a wealthy wholesale trader of cloth and wheat in the Aurangabad district of eastern India. In 2016 he had a wedding budget of around £93,000, which would have bought a luxurious wedding for his daughter.

Rather than splash the money on a lavish wedding, Ajay decided to do good with it. He used it to build 90 homes for the poorest in his area. He had two acres of land and built the homes there. He then chose people to live in the homes. The people chosen had to have certain requirements to get a home. They needed to be poor, live in a slum and not suffer from an addiction.

Shreya, Ajay’s daughter, fully supported her fathers decision and was even able to hand over the keys to the new homeowners after her wedding.

The beneficiaries of the new homes are already said to be benefiting, with one woman reported to have said she is happy now that she and her family do not have to deal with the problems of accessing basic needs such as water and electricity.

Each home is 12 by 20 square foot and has two windows and two doors and is fitted with lights. These are things these people didn’t have access to before so it was a great day being given a home that would give them a whole new lease on life.
