Year Haemophilia

Amy-Lee Jefferies is having a year! From losing work and having a rain spider in her hair, to having her laptop give up but her faith has been restored by a generous stranger.

Johannesburg, South Africa (12 November 2021) – It is safe to say that the last two years have had a toll on every single person. For Amy-Lee Jefferies, her breaking point arrived bright and early this year and the punches just kept on coming.

Amy-Lee has been taking each stumble in her stride but when her laptop decided to give up the ghost, she just about faltered. It was when a generously persistent stranger reached out to restore her faith in humanity that she decided to share her story.

Amy-Lee took to her community Facebook group, I Love Fourways, to share how her year started and how it will be ending on a high. We spoke to Amy-Lee about how sharing her story made her feel and she said, she hopes it will inspire more people to be caring and spread kindness.

“This year, well this pandemic actually, has been taxing on us all. Personally, I had lost quite a bit of faith in humanity during this time.

If it wasn’t losing work, it was the depression. If it wasn’t the depression, it was the anxiety. If it wasn’t the anxiety, it was the being taken advantage of by loved ones. If it wasn’t that, it was harassment. If it wasn’t harassment, it was the tears of questioning my degree because I was worried I couldn’t afford it, couldn’t trust my own brain to remember and if I had the right “idea” of what sort of person I want to be.

I have also had a rain spider in my hair this year 🤣

After a cringe moment of harassment in an Uber, I went to look at bikes using my laptop thinking “this is it, I am DONE”. 10 minutes in, my laptop gives up on me. Exits the realm of possibility. Takes a little dirt nap. Whatever you call it.

After numbly trying to reboot it and run diagnostics, I went to the bathroom and ugly cried. I took this as a sign from the guy upstairs that he was testing me. Let me tell you, mama was tiiiiired 😔

The cost of hard drives etc pained me and I came to this group in hopes of finding a laptop that wouldn’t betray me that would also not bankrupt me. I was going down but I was going down swinging, bet.

And then a man messaged me. A man I have no mutual friends with and nothing in common besides this group. It’s 2021, I was prepared for “strange” – nobody is that kind anymore right? Especially with my luck. Right?

He offered to donate his laptop to me. I initially declined, saying I could eventually make a plan to get mine fixed or another so he should donate or someone who doesn’t have a plan at all. This man was stubborn and persistent and I was half-thinking he was yanking my chain anyways. I was thankful but hesitant because really, I HAVE HAD A RAIN SPIDER IN MY HAIR THIS YEAR 💔

This morning I received the SMS from Postnet saying my parcel was ready for collection. I joked with a friend, that I was half not expecting it to be there. Even the driver was curious to see what would happen 😂

And bless all the stars and moons, this man had sent a laptop to me (with a charger!), a small human he doesn’t know. Someone who doesn’t know me from Adam or Eve, pulled through for me 🥺

I don’t know if he wants to be tagged but he will definitely see this and I just want to say thank you (for the 60th time) for restoring my faith in the kindness of humanity ♥️ most likely saved me from sinking into a black hole too”
