One woman is taking the non-profit Queen Butterfly under her own wing! The centre that looks after children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities needs help, so Rozette Botha decided to walk the walk.

Johannesburg, South Africa (27 March, 2023) — While some might hike a great distance of 320km for a sense of accomplishment, Rozette Botha has another goal in mind. Taking the needs of the non-profit Queen Butterfly Foundation under her wing, Rozette will trek a portion of the Spanish Camino, Camino De Santiago.

After learning a little more about The Queen Butterfly Foundation based in Roodeport, it’s easy to understand why incredible people like Rozette go to the literal lengths that they do, to help where they can. The non-profit provides much-needed assistance for children and young adults living with profound mental and physical disabilities. While their team is dedicated to providing hands-on care, they do so with no government funding.

Hiking so the Butterfly can Soar

Rozette’s quest seeks to raise R500 000 for Queen Butterfly’s new home, and it comes at a crucial time for the butterflies. Currently, the non-profit shares space with a Church, but they are to vacate the premises by the end of May.

With keeping Queen Butterfly’s wings spread and its literal doors open in mind, Rozette’s hike has the power to keep the foundation going. Her journey begins on 21 May where she’ll tackle 320kms of the French Way from Leòn to Santiago De Compostela, until 16 June.

Of the trip’s costs, Rozette shares that she is paying for everything out of pocket. And, 100% of the donations will go to Queen Butterfly.

This isn’t Rozette’s first time walking so that the butterfly can soar either. A few years back, she tackled the Tankwa Camino endurance trail (256.6 km) from Calvinia to Ceres.

The trek also serves as a tribute to her late son who passed away at just 21 days old. Ruan was the first South African to be diagnosed with Carbohydrate-deficient glycoprotein syndrome.
