Yarn

Ouma Bets Breitenbach has knitted over 150 jerseys for street children, orphans and HIV babies using recycled yarn that would have been thrown away!

Caltoni Knitwear and Mattress Warehouse partnered with Ouma Bets Breitenbach to recycle old yarn and turn it into jerseys for children in need. The knitwear company would have thrown the yarn away but Ouma Bets has a lot of time on her hands and a heart of gold to use that time to work on jerseys for needy children.

Caltoni in Partnership with Mattress Warehouse and this amazing elderly lady 86 years young Ouma Bets Breitenbach, has turned the waste yarn that we would normally throw away into the most awesome knitted jerseys that then was donated to 3 organizations, that take care for street kids, orphans, and HIV positive children. We salute you Ouma Bets for your generosity of giving up your time and doing this wonderful deed for the underprivileged.

Ouma Bets makes use of recycled wool and yarn to knit jerseys for young children in need. Her focus is on children ages 4 to 6 who are either orphaned, street children or affected by HIV. She spends an entire year working on the jerseys and just before winter hits, she sends them to organisations in need.

Ouma Bets starts her yearly project every May and knits until the end of April the next year. On average she makes about 150 jerseys and every single one is unique. She uses multiple colours and knows her pattern by memory.

“She said that is her part of help the poor and homeless, and that is a gift she received from God to do something with her hands , cost minimum.  Just her two hands and her time.  But it keeps her busy and she thanks God for the many blessings and health that she can still enjoy on 86 years old. ” – Marina, Mattress Warehouse
