Zhara du Toit, the little girl behind a special project bringing joy to other sick children across South Africa, has officially rung the Groote Schuur bell; signalling the end of her radiation treatments!
Cape Town, South Africa (13 September 2023) — When Zhara du Toit was diagnosed with cancer in January this year, she and her family couldn’t have known how much strength the tough journey would take, nor how much strength it would beget for others in similar circumstances.
The young hero took a little gifted lamb that stood softly as a symbol of strength for her and turned it into an entire movement of good in South Africa—Zhara’s Little Lamb Project.
Through encouraging others to knit, crochet or donate soft sidekicks to boost hope and joy for other sick children in hospital, little lambs have travelled all over South Africa from Bloemfontein to Tygerberg; giving strength to fighters near and far.
Now, Zhara is celebrating a milestone moment in her own journey! Recently, she rang the bell at Groote Schuur Hospital, signalling a big moment for the little champion— the end of her 28 radiation treatments.
“Thank you to the amazing medical team at Groote Schuur Hospital. Their skills, hard work, friendliness, kindness, and care made this difficult journey so much more bearable. When that bell rang today, it wasn’t just the end of radiation; it was a celebration of Zhara’s incredible bravery and strength. She’s already cancer-free, but she’ll continue with chemotherapy until January 2024 to make sure no cancer cells linger,” her family shared.
