Banyana Banyana has curated a team of stars, many of whom are now following their dreams on the international football stage.
Global (29 January 2020) – Banyana Banyana has made South Africa so proud, the soccer team is filled with brilliant players who are being seen for their talents internationally. Thembi Kgatlana is yet another soccer player who got her international dream turned into a reality.
Thembi Kgatlana, a forward for Banyana Banyana, was offered the opportunity to join the Sport Lisboa e Benfica, commonly known as Benfica, a Portuguese women’s football team based in Lisbon. She signed with the international club and has a very bright future ahead of her.
Thembi is 23-years-old, and already she has earned herself the CAF Women Footballer of the Year. Joining her fellow teammates on the international stage is very promising for the team as a whole. Coach Desiree Ellis is confident that the team’s growth will be boosted by international appointments. The players snapped up by international clubs are learning incredible skills that will help the national team.
“We played Cameroon and Nigeria in 2016, 90% of their players at that time were playing abroad and we struggled to match that.
“But now that we are also exporting more players, I think we will do well and compete with them,”
Thembi is excited about her next career milestone and hopes to make South Africa proud while in Portugal.
“I am very excited to sign for Benfica. I thank the team, the President, and everyone for giving me the opportunity to come to Portugal and Benfica. This is a great club in Portugal and known around the world. I have already had the opportunity to see history and records, and for me, it is a great honour to be part of such a great club.”
We are so proud of you Thembi, keep up the stellar performances on the field, and we can’t wait to see how you do going forward!
